Villagers for Veterans 2018 Mission: A Home for Sgt. Pam Kelly

by Ryan Erisman | Originally Published: February 23, 2018 | Updated On: May 29, 2019

Villagers for Veterans is a non-profit based in The Villages, and since 2014 they have been focused on helping severely wounded veterans by raising much-needed funding or additional resources.

This year they are raising money to either build a home in the historic district, or purchase and retrofit a home for a severely injured veteran named Sergeant Pam Kelly.

Pam is a quadriplegic, with just limited use of her left arm, and living in The Villages would give her the freedom to have greater independence.

Grab the tissues and watch this inspiring video about Pam:

In other news…

Work began this week filling the sinkholes in Calumet Grove that I told you about last week. They weren’t repaired immediately because you have to wait for a few days after they stop growing before engineers can inspect and recommend a proper course of action as far as repairs are concerned. I haven’t heard any updates yet when those affected might be able to get back in their homes. [Villages-News]

“Premier adult community with everything you could possibly want, need, or dream of doing in your retirement years is just a golf cart ride away ― now the scene of a murder.”

That’s the first sentence of the Amazon description for the new book Vindication (A Matt Royal Mystery) by H. Terrell Griffin.

The description continues:

“In this John Grisham style mystery, Matt Royal, the retired lawyer-turned-beach-bum is called back into the courtroom to defend his girlfriend J. D. Duncan’s Aunt Esther, who lives in the sprawling North Central Florida retirement community of The Villages. A best-selling author has been murdered after a book signing, and Aunt Esther has been arrested. Matt has a history with the local sheriff―one which may not bode well for his client.”

For those of you who are tired of the way The Villages is sometimes depicted in print, (I’m looking at you Leisureville) you can rest easy.

From Florida Weekly:

“Mr. Griffin’s treatment of The Villages lacks the usual sarcasm that taints other attempts at capturing this highly successful retirement community. His is a respectful understanding of what makes The Villages tick.”

Sounds like a winner. I’m loading it onto my Kindle now.
