There is a rumor that circulates on the internet from time to time that people who live in The Villages will put a loofah (sometimes spelled luffa or loofa) on their car or golf carts to indicate that they are available for swinging, hooking up, or husband/wife swapping (also known as key swapping).
I can confirm that this rumor is: FALSE

First off, the item that Villagers will sometimes put on their car is typically not a loofah but more commonly a pool noodle.
The reason some people do this is to help them find their vehicle more easily in a crowded parking lot.
Much like putting a colorful luggage tag on your black suitcase so that it stands out among all of the other black suitcases on the luggage conveyor, it's the same idea if you've ever stepped outside of Publix on a sunny central Florida afternoon and tried to spot your white car among a sea of all the other white cars, and don't quite remember which aisle you parked down.
Some people who have regular radio antennas on their car will slip the noodle over that. Others will slice the noodle down one end and put it on the roof rack of their vehicle.
Now you know why some people in The Villages put a loofah, but more commonly a pool noodle, on their cars or golf carts.
The Villages regularly leads the nation in number of new home sales. I think that if this loofa rumor were actually true, they'd probably be selling a lot more!
But alas, just another urban legend about The Villages. If you're interested, I've also written about The Villages STD rumor.
